Dog vaccination drive vs Leptospirosis set

In an effort to prevent the dog-to-human transmission of the dreaded Leptospirosis disease, the City Veterinary Office will launch this week a series of vaccination campaigns in five flood-devastated areas of the city.

Acting Cagayan de Oro City Veterinarian Dr. Lucien Anthony P. Acac said the anti-Leptospirosis vaccination drive will be conducted in Tibasak, barangay Macasandig covered court on January 25, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon; Consolacion evacuation center on January 25, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.; January 26 a.m. in Balulang evacuation center; January 26 p.m. in Kauswagan covered court; and January 27 in Calaanan Tent City.

“I urged our dog owners to have their pets vaccinated against Leptospirosis on the said dates and venues. The importance of this vaccination drive is that you’re not only protecting your pet dogs from infection, but as well as protect your family, and the community in general against this disease,” Dr. Acac emphasized.

Target in the vaccination campaign are dogs aged six weeks above, according to Dr. Acac.

Research study shows that Leptospirosis is contracted primarily through contact with the urine of an infected animal, but can also be transmitted through bite wounds and the ingestion of infected material.

People at greatest risk of getting the disease are those who regularly clean up after animals and those who swim, wade in, or drink contaminated waters. Since dogs constantly sniff the urine spots of other dogs, they are at greater risk than humans.

The city government-initiated vaccination drive is in partnership with non-government organization Humane Society, Philippine Veterinary Medicine Association-Northern Mindanao Chapter and vaccine provider VIRBAC drug company.
