Awarding Houses @ GK-Shell, Calaanan Relocation Site
City Councilor Nadya Emano-Elipe hands a certificate of award to a resident of a GK-Shell house during a Turnover Ceremony held in Calaanan, December 19, 2012. Top officials of Gawad Kalinga and the Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. were present during the ceremony.
Together with officials of the Gawad Kalinga, City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Y. Emano is slated to officially distribute 150 houses during the GK-Berjaya Village Awarding Ceremony on October 16, 2012 9:00 AM at Bolonsiri, in the Camaman-an Relocation Site.
The mayor clarified that the beneficiaries for this awarding are the 81 pre-selected families who were displaced by typhoon Sendong, and the 69 families from barangay 35 and 36 who were affected by the road-right-of-way appropriation.
The Gawad Kalinga (GK) is building 250 new houses where tents used to stand in Tent City 1.
This is the announcement made by City Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Y. Emano after he led the groundbreaking and capsule laying ceremony for the project in Calaanan.
City Mayor Vicente ‘Dongkoy’ Y. Emano, who grabbed a paintbrush himself and spent time painting walls, led a horde of City Hall employees in a ‘Labor Day’ labor of love last May 1, 2012 as they came to the Relocation Sites toting picks, shovels, paint brushes, and other equipment with the goal of helping in the construction of the houses for the typhoon Sendong survivors.
The Mayor announced his request for interested city hall employees who wish to volunteer and contribute through actual physical labor in the relocation sites after CdeO’s Gawad Kalinga frontman Tootsie Besinga conveyed their need for more volunteers and the idea of making Labor Day memorable for city hall employees through a labor of love for the sake of our brothers and sisters who survived the Sendong typhoon.
Thus, the Upper Camaman-an and 2.7 hectare Calaanan relocation sites saw crowds of employees sweating it out under the hot summer sun digging with picks and shovels for the houses’ foundations, moving concrete hollow blocks, mixing concrete grout, painting walls, and other similar activities.
“Dako akong pasalamat sa migahin sa ilang panahon ug kusog aron matukod ang mga panimalay sa mga biktima sa bagyong Sendong. Ako nanghinaot nga unta sa ilang tagsa-tagsa ka mga panahon, ilang ipadayon kini dili lamang alang sa mga empleyado sa City Hall kon dili lakip na sa mga katawhan sa dakbayan,” the Mayor stated.
On Independence Day, another series of volunteer work awaits city hall employees as June 12 to 15 are scheduled for further ‘labor of love’ on the relocation sites. Mayor Emano also invited everyone from all organizations to come join in the volunteer work with the Gawad Kalinga.
At least 200 permanent housing units for typhoon Sendong victims will soon rise at the city’s 2.7-hectare relocation site in District 6, sitio Calaanan, barangay Canitoan as City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano led the groundbreaking ceremony held on April 11. The housing project is a joint partnership of the city government, Gawad Kalinga, SM Cagayan de Oro, Banco de Oro and Couples for Christ.
